Six Simulacra

Every Resene branch has a book of common paint problems called the “Pictorial Field Guide”, which we use to help diagnose paint issues. Staff sometimes refer to this manual colloquially as “The Paint Bible’. Each painting displays signs of ‘failing paint’, signs which are illustrated within ‘The Paint Bible’, and each painting is mimicking a popular design choice in terms of colour and sheen.

Each painting has Eighth Black White ‘trims’ in Lustacryl, Lustacryl being the most common type of paint for interior skirtings, doors and trims. Skirting and trims can be said to have three main purposes. The first is to tidy up the edges of the walls, effectively hiding uneven edges in the Gib, or uneven flooring. The second is that the wood and paint used for trims protects the walls from vacuum cleaners, mops or hyperactive cats. The third is skirting and trims act as a framing device for the wall, which mimics framed artworks.

All paints used were found in the paint recycling bins at Westgate Resene, and so every colour, sheen and paint type within each painting reflects a choice a customer made for their home or commercial space.
